I am happy to say that I can greet you all this morning from the comfort of my desk back in New York City. I had a wonderful vacation in Seattle and Sun Valley, but by the time I boarded my flight to the East Coast, I was so ready to be back. Little did I know what kind of temperatures would be greeting me as I stepped out to hail a cab from the airport.

The January chill is very much here, and it’s forced us to pull out all those giant, heavy, warm and toasty layers we’ve kept shoved in boxes and in the back of the closet all year. Though I hate the feeling of having to rip off every layer as fast as I possibly can once I’m inside and boiling hot, I rather enjoy taking efforts to layer myself up well.

I know I’ve mentioned before that this is the time to take care in looking cute with your winter looks, and I promise it’s not that hard. Start with a chic pair of gloves, a classic pair like these from Club Monaco will last for seasons to come. Under your jacket wear as many natural fibers as you can manage (cotton, wool, cashmere, silk) – they’re always warmer because they come from animals. Don’t forget your hat – you lost the most heat out of the top of your head, so be sure to find something warm and fuzzy to cover your mane and ears.

And what of our denim? I’m the kind of girl who will brave cold temperatures with bare ankles (like the lady above), but when snow starts falling that’s not really an option. Winter very much becomes the season of the skinny jean, so go for pairs that are nice and thick, or even pull a pair of tights on underneith! I vote for infusing a little colored denim where you can to break from the drear of the season, but nowhere can you look more at home in head-to-toe black than New York City.
